What is the truck toll in Germany and who has to pay it?

Since 2005, trucks have been required to pay tolls on highways and federal highways in Germany. The toll is a charge levied on trucks in order to be allowed to use certain sections of road. In Germany, the toll is levied on a distance-related basis, i.e. based on the distance traveled. The purpose of this charge is to generate revenue for the preservation, maintenance and expansion of the transport infrastructure. The toll is intended to ensure that those who use the roads the most, and therefore put more strain on them, contribute accordingly to financing their maintenance and development.

Since December 1, 2023, the toll has been calculated based on the distance traveled by the vehicle subject to the toll. It is made up of a toll rate in cents per kilometer, which includes the respective shares for CO₂ emissions, air pollution, noise pollution and infrastructure costs.

Which vehicle categories are subject to the toll in Germany?

The toll obligation applies to trucks and articulated lorries if their gross vehicle weight is more than 7.5 tons. Vehicles with a lower weight are exempt from the toll.
